General information for residence permit application

If the third country national would like to stay longer than 3 months in Hungary, he/she needs to ask for residence permit.

In order to apply for a residence permit, a prior appointment is required at the visa centers of VFS Global.

The appointment is booked via https://visa.vfsglobal.com/chn/en/hun/attend-centre.

Please note that when submitting the application the applicant is required to appear before the authority in person. If the applicant is a minor of limited capacity or if incompetent, the application may be submitted by the applicant’s legal representative in his/her stead. If the minor client has reached the age of six at the time the application is submitted, he/she shall be required to appear in person when the application is submitted. The responsibility for ascertaining the minor’s physical presence before the immigration authority lies with the legal representative.

When the application is submitted, the applicant’s facial likeness, signature and – over the age of six years – fingerprint will be taken for the residence permit issued with biometric data. The third-country national affected is obliged to abide by, and perforce tolerate, that procedure.

The decision about the residence permit application will be made by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, our Consulate General has no influence on the decision.

If the decision of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing is in favour of the application for residence permit, the entry visa for receiving a residence permit shall be issued by our Consular and Visa Section.

Moreover, please note that D visas (valid for 90 days) for entitlement to receive a residence permit issued to third-country nationals are single-entry visas authorising a stay of not more than 30 days, therefore we recommend to visit the regional directorate of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing responsible for the place where their future accommodation is located as soon as possible after entering Hungary in order to receive the residence permit and register such Hungarian accommodation.
